Wisconsin Veterans Home Open to Spanish War Veterans on July 1st

 

            Through an act passed by the present legislature and signed by the Governor the Wisconsin Veterans Home at Waupaca has been opened to veterans of the Spanish American War, the Philippine insurrection and the China relief expedition, who have been honorably discharged from the service of the United States, and who are residents of this state or have served in any Wisconsin regiment or command, or in the navy of the United States being credited to Wisconsin.  Section 2 of the new act, which becomes effective July 1, 1923, reads as follows:

            Section 2.  A new subsection is added to section 45.07 of the statues to read:  (45.07)(3) Applications for entrance into and maintenance at the Wisconsin veterans’ home shall be considered and passed upon in the following order:  civil war veterans; the mothers, wives and widows of civil war veterans; civil war nurses, veterans of the Spanish-American war, Philippine insurrection and China relief expedition; and the mothers, wives and widows of veterans of the Spanish-American war, Philippine insurrection or China relief expedition shall be admitted into the Wisconsin veterans’ home before July 1, 1927; nor shall any veterans of such Spanish-American war, Philippine insurrection or China relief expedition, except when admitted with their wives, be admitted into said home before July 1, 1927; and further provided, that not to exceed eight persons shall be admitted in any one year prior to July 1, 1927.

            The 35th annual report of the Home, for the year ending Dec. 31, 1922, there was a total of 492 members, and on Dec. 31, 1922, the membership has fallen to 465.  On Dec. 31, 1922 the average age of male members was 80 years, and that of female members 74.6 years.

            The oldest member of the home is a woman, who was admitted about two months ago, she having reached the advanced age of 99 years on Dec. 15.  The youngest woman is 56.  The oldest man in the home is 97, and the youngest 73.
