WAUPACA POST May 16, 1889 Patchen’s Tribute to “Holy Willy” The moral caliber of Grandma Holmes of the Waupaca Republican is beautifully set forth: Six years ago or thereabouts he swore to a false affidavit for the purpose of getting $2.50 out of the county treasury; now he swears that his wife, and his sister-in-law, and his daughter Etta own the Republican, and not he, and thereby the Republican secures the city printing which he as city clerk and Republican owner could not receive, Grandma Holmes admits “there is not much money in the printing contract, but there is some glory” – whether in the contract or in his remarkable capacity for swearing to affidavits, old Grandma Glory does not presume to designate. - Dual City Tribune. |
