S.D. SHAMBEAU TAKES TUMBLE AS ROADSTER TURNS A SUMERSAULT

As S.D. Shambeau was returning from his farm west of Scandinavia Thursday evening, accompanied by his brother-in-law, Rush Touton, the housing containing the transmission gears broke off permitting this cluster of gears and shifting lever to drop to the ground under the car.  As this casing and gears were connected to the front end of the main drive shaft it is easy to see that the consequence could be nothing short of an overturn similar to what might happen if the pole of a wagon should drop down and snub in the ground while the team was still hitched to the vehicle.

The accident occurred between the Ezra Townsend and the old J.J. Ross residences about half way between Scandinavia and this city, the car going down grade when the accident occurred.

Shambeau sustained a fracture of the right arm and many very painful gashes and bruises.  Touton received several gashes about the body and a severe blow from some source that was thought for a time to have fractured the lower jaw.

Both men were soon able to sit up and early in the week to walk down town.  On Tuesday they were taken out to the Chain o’ Lakes to rusticate.  The damage to the car was estimated to be under $200.  It is reported that the Essex Motors company has offered Mr. Shambeau a new car in exchange for the damaged roadster.
