WIS. BULLETIN SAYS POTATO LEAF HOPPERS DON’T LIKE BORDEAUX

Bordeaux mixtures controls the potato leaf hoppers.

Where the leaf hopper caused losses last year, the losses may be heavy this year if there is a long dry spell, warns J.E. Dudley of the economic entomology department of the Wisconsin College of Agriculture.  The leaf hopper sucks the plant juices causing the leaves to curl and the plants to wither and die.

A 4-4-50 Bordeaux mixture consisting of 4 pounds of copper sulphate, four pounds of unslacked lime and 50 gallons of soft water is the best control measure to adopt.  The copper sulphate and unslacked lime are mixed with water separately and then poured together.  The under side of the leaves must be thoroughly sprayed.
