WAUPACA COUNTY NEWS October 12, 1922
THE POTATO SHOW WILL BE HELD AT STEVENS POINT THIS YEAR – OCT. 30 TO NOV. 3 GROWERS SHOULD ATTEND Many Potatoes This Year Waupaca County Yield Will Be Around 2-1/2 Million Bushels Why Growers Should Raise Good Spuds
When we say that the annual Wisconsin Potato Show is the biggest potato show in the world, it should lead every Waupaca county potato grower to realize that an exceptional opportunity awaits him in being able to attend and exhibit at such a show, especially when it is being held almost within the border of his own county. This year the show is at Stevens Point on Oct. 30th to Nov. 3rd. Statistics show that this year there is in the neighborhood of 17,000 acres of potatoes to be harvested in this county, which will mean a total yield of better than 2-1/2 million bushels! It is figures like this that make us realize the fact that Waupaca county is one of the largest potato shipping centers of the world, and we should naturally be interested to the greatest possible extent in a potato show and state convention that are so necessary to assist in maintaining the quality and standardization of our commercial potatoes through the encouragement of the use of better seed and the dissemination of information regarding better cultural methods. Waupaca county farmers should not only attend with their families, but should exhibit as well. It requires but 32 potatoes to make a show sample, and certainly all of our growers can take enough time to prepare such an exhibit. The premiums are attractive although the experience and benefits received through the selection of show potatoes is worth much more to the average farmer than any premium he could receive. There is breeding in a potato the same as in the choicest livestock, and the same additional profits can be obtained through the breeding of better spuds as well as through the breeding of better animals. We must all learn to place upon the market a better grade of potatoes, for the higher we raise our standards the greater will be the consumption of your farm products. We must remember that he consumer always buys most of that article which is most uniformly good. Poor quality stock discourages the wholesaler, the jobber, and retailer, the consumer, and of course, the producer because his returns are always in proportion to the quality of his products. “Waupaca County – The potato capitol of America and livestock center of Wisconsin” is our slogan. Let’s show the growers of Wisconsin through our exhibit at the potato show that we are still and always will be the leading potato county in the state. |
