WAUPACA POST May 16, 1889
Gilmore & Ware’s Warehouse Burned, with $10,000 Bushels of Potatoes
A fire alarm Tuesday morning brought out the entire population of the city, as usual, and for several minutes it didn’t know which way to run in order to see the sole exciting episode of the day. After a time it was announced that Gilmore and Ware’s warehouse was on fire and the population made a rush for the depot. The fire is supposed to have been started by a spark from a passing engine, and was first discovered by Andrew Nelson, who gave the alarm. The engine was hauled over in due time and set at the water tank, but the building was too far gone to be saved by the time a stream was turned on the flames, but good service was done in saving Baldwin, Penney and Ed Bailey’s purchase across the track. Sam Hall had 10,000 bushels of potatoes in the warehouse and these were baked to a turn. The potatoes were insured in Winfield Scott’s agency for $700, as was also the warehouse for $1400 in E. Coolidge’s agency. |
