OILED GRAVEL PROPOSED FOR FULTON STREET

MAJORITY OF COMMON COUNCIL IN FAVOR OF PATCHING PORTION OF STREET ALONG STREET CAR LINE

At the Common Council meeting Tuesday evening, the usual routine business was soon passed.  Then followed the discussion of what ought to be done with Fulton street along the car tracks.

The gravel put in by the city on that part belonging to the street car company because it was claimed the corporation was unable to finance such improvement as was done by the individual property owners along this street, is not holding up as well as the asphalt portion on either side.

Mayor Paronoto made an argument that this corporation should do its share by paving the street it occupies, just as individuals are compelled to do.  He urged that the experiment tried in order to help the corporation is working an injury to the street that is maintained by the city.

Enoch Perry of Milwaukee, spoke in behalf of the street car company.  M.S. Rice of this city seconded the argument of the visitor.  Walter Nelson spoke in favor of the street car in aiding resorters to come and go from city to the Lakes.  Miss Hutchinson spoke in behalf of the car company.

Aldermen voiced the argument of the Mayor.  Alderman Rudersdorf took the side of those who defend present arrangements.

Members of the Board of Public Works had decided to use more gravel and heavy road oil to try to hold the gravel from washing out.  Mayor Paronto answered that any make-shift that will save the city’s portion of the street will satisfy him.  L.D. Smith, not as city attorney, but as a citizen favored further leniency to the Electric Railway Company.
