WAUPACA COUNTY POST

May 3, 1923

CITY FATHERS TAKE ISSUE OF TRAFFIC COP

AT TUESDAY EVENING MEETING TRAFFIC ORDINANCE WAS LAID OVER

UNTIL NEXT REGULAR MEETING

At the city council meeting Tuesday evening the routine business of allowing pay rolls and bills was soon passed.

The County Post was recommended by the committee on printing to be the city official paper for the ensuing year and an ordinance to that effect was passed.

Arterial Highways

A proposal to make West Fulton street and Main street from city hall to Lake street arterial highways was introduced but was on motion laid over two weeks.  By such a system all persons crossing or driving onto these portions of these streets must observe the “Stop” signs and must watch not to collide with cars given right of way on Main and Fulton streets.  The sentiment among the council seemed to be unfavorable to granting drivers extra concessions and right of way on some of the streets of Waupaca.  It seemed to be the sentiment of the council that changes are likely to result in confusion and this change especially would be no improvement over the present rule.

The matter of employing a speed cop called forth a lively discussion.  Mayor Paronto defended the idea of a plain clothes speed cop and the cop in uniform seemed best to several who put up arguments to support their view. The showing of partiality was stoutly condemned by members of the council.  It was intimated that a motor policeman usually gives a town a hard name among tourists and permits home people to exceed legal speed without arrest.  No appropriation was made for a speed cop at the meeting Tuesday evening.

A motion was passed authorizing placing “danger” and “no parking” signs where they may be needed to aid in prevention of accidents.
