WAUPACA COUNTY POST July 24, 1924 WAUPACA SEES FIERY CROSS OF KU KLUX KLAN DEMONSTRATION MONDAY EVENING AT NORTH END OF MAIN STREET ORGANIZERS ACTIVE The first evidence of active Ku Klux organization here was shown Monday evening when a “fiery cross” was burned in this city. At about half past nine the cross was seen on the hill near the Danes’ Home opera house, at the north end of Main street. No one was near the cross at the time, and of course no one say who placed it there and lit it. The cross burned quite brightly for several minutes and was visible from several blocks away. It was variously estimated at from eight to twenty feet in height. Organization Here It is believed that the burning of the first cross indicates that the Klan has now a membership of over 150 in this city. It has been known that Klan organizers have been active in the city, and Klan publicity material has been received here. Many and divers rumors are afloat as to the organization here, who belongs, what the Klan proposes to accomplish here, etc., yet little certainty is known. |
