MEMORIAL TREE PLANTED FOR WAR VICTIMS

A LIVING CHRISTMAS TREE NOW GRACES COURTYARD SQUARE

AND COMMEMORATES SACRIFICE

 

            A living Christmas Tree has been planted in Courthouse Square as a memorial to t hose who gave their lives for their country during the World War.

            An appropriate bronze tablet is to be placed at the foot of the tree, and the tree is to be lighted each year from Christmas Eve to New Year’s night inclusive.

            Taps will be sounded, by a soldier in uniform, at eight o’clock each night the tree is lighted.

            The project of a living Christmas Tree memorial was started by the Woman’s Club last year and has been carried to a successful completion by the ladies of the American Legion Auxiliary.

            The consent of the County Board and City Council was freely granted, as to the planting of the tree, and it was specified that the tree should never be used for commercial advertising.

            The committee in charge of the work are:  Mrs. F.A. Houseman and Mrs. W.C. Baldwin of the Woman’s Club of Waupaca; Mrs. Archibald Gmeiner and Mrs. Harvey Peterson of the American Legion Auxiliary; Mr. Con Gmeiner, Mr. Chas. Nelson and Mr. Folmer Christenson of the City Council.

            The committee wish to take this opportunity of publicly thank Mr. A.W. Spindt for the interest he has shown in the project and for the donation of his services and use of his truck and derrick to raise the tree and bring it to the courtyard, where by the help of nembers of the American Legion and others it was planted Nov. 29th.

            There will be a public dedication of the tree and tablet announcement of which will appear later.
