Irving P. Lord of Waupaca is in the city on business and was at the Plankinton last evening.  Mr. Lord reports great prosperity in Waupaca and vicinity, especially among the farmers.  “A few years ago,” he said, “many of the farms in the locality were heavily mortgaged and nearly every farmer was a debtor.  Now it is all changed and few farms are mortgaged.  The two banks in Waupaca have nearly $800,000 deposits, and most of this belongs to the farming community.  Potato raising and the extensive dairy interests have brought these favorable results.

“Waupaca,” said Mr. Lord, “now stands at the head of the Wisconsin summer resorts.  The Chain o’ Lakes, near our city, were never the scene of so much activity as this summer.  Thousands of people have enjoyed their beauties the last three months, and many people are there now expecting to remain through September.  Our large summer hotel, the Grand View, has done a phenomenal business this season.  Not all those who applied for accommodation could be taken.  Most of the guests are from St. Louis, Louisville, New Orleans and other southern cities, with quite a number from Milwaukee.  It is said of the Grand View that it has the most exclusive patronage of any summer hotel in Wisconsin or Michigan.”
