NEW BANK BUILDING

Plans Received for the Waupaca County National Bank Building

There is no backward movement in the growth of Waupaca.  Ever since the old wooden blocks have commenced to disappear on Main Street, they have been replaced with a brick structure and every years has marked an improvement on those built in former years.

The purchase last winter of the corner which was occupied by the first brick block in the city, built by the old pioneer R.R. Roberts in the 60’s marks a new era in the class of business blocks to be erected in the future and if Waupaca succeeds in many undertakings and enterprises contemplated, more such blocks will be erected.

The block alluded to is one to be erected on the site of the old Roberts block just torn down; for the Waupaca County National Bank; is to be in size 38 x 107, three stories above the basement.  The corner room on the first floor will be the bank.  The entrance will be from the corner which will be cut-off, making a pleasing prospect from both streets and two polished granite columns on either side of he doorway will still further add to the appearance of the entrance as well as the whole block.  The floors of the bank will be tiled with marble; the woodwork natural cherry, oil finished, the vault, safes, locks, and bank furnishings to be modern and the best made.  There will be a store north of bank room extending back so as to use if wanted, another store room, making an L out to the Union street side.  Two stores 20 x 36 will front on Union street.  The second floor will be done off for a number of first class office rooms. Two entrances will reach this floor, a side stairway on Union street and a narrow stairway on Main. Wide corridors on the second floor will make all the offices as well as the staircase leading to the third floor easy of access.  The third floor will be done off for the exclusive use of the Knights of Pythias order for a “Castle Hall” and the Uniform Rank K.P. for Armory and social purposes.

The building is to be steam heated and electrically lighted throughout.  The boiler for the generation of steam being located in the extreme western end of the basement.  Ample provision will also be made for waterworks and sewerage system, to be used when necessary.  The building is to be of the best pressed brick, stone and terra cotta trimmings.  It will be certainly a beautiful structure.  Architect Waters of Oshkosh drew the plans and they have been approved.

Different contractors are figuring on the work but the job has not been let.  It is to be completed ready for occupancy some time during the year of 1893.
