Angelus Retirement Community Offers Assisted Living

By Angie Landsverk, Post Staff Writer

The philosophy at Angelus Retirement Community is a simple one:

“God committed the care and comfort of men and women and all things under heaven to his angels.”

Named after the mother of Vince Cassiani, the CEO of Angelus Retirement Corp., those who live in one of the Angelus retirement communities are encouraged to make it their home.

Based in Appleton, the corporation will have a total of 10 retirement communities after the Clintonville facility opens this fall

The Waupaca retirement community opened Feb. 15.

“It took just over a year form start to finish,” said Rae Johnson, the community relations director at Angelus Retirement Community in Waupaca.

Marketing studies showed that the Waupaca area needed assisted-living facilities and could support a place like Angelus, she said.

At Angelus, there are 36 independent living apartments, 52 assisted living apartments and six villas.

“We are licensed as a residential care apartment complex.  Each of them are apartments, not just one room.  That is what makes it different from a CBRF (community-based residential facility),” Johnson said.

Located on County Trunk QQ, the retirement community has Foxfire Golf Club as one of its neighbors.

The idea at Angelus is to keep those who live there as independent as possible and to keep them stimulated – both socially and intellectually.

Presently, there are seven people living in assisted living apartments and nine people living in independent living apartments.

More people will be moving into the community in June.

Shirley Orr is the executive director in Waupaca and is also a registered nurse.

Orr is on call 24 hours a day, and there is also an in-house emergency response system.  Because the retirement community is not a nursing home, full nursing care is not provided

Once thee retirement community is full, there will be more social activities offered.

“Angelus is big on activities,” Orr said.

For example, each facility has a Happy Hour at 3:30 p.m. every Wednesday just prior to dinner.  Angelus provides the refreshments.

The apartments come in various sizes.

There are one and two bedroom apartments for those who live independently and efficiency, and one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments for those who live with assistance.

Various services are offered at Angelus Retirement Community.

Among those available to assisted living residents are three home-cooked meals daily, assistance with daily living, medication monitoring, weight and blood pressure screenings, personal laundry done weekly, a kitchenette with a sink, microwave and refrigerator, scheduled transportation to social events and shopping, assistance with health-care-related appointment scheduling, weekly housekeeping and activities.
