City Hall Useage01
Waupaca Post
FOR THE LIBRARY
John Gordon made a suggestion on Monday, that ought to be thoroughly discussed and acted upon favorably. It is that the large room in the City Hall be used for the public library, which has outgrown its quarters in the Penney block. The City Hall is used now only as a place for various meetings, which could just as well be held at the court house, and as a First ward polling place, for which the room in which the firemen meet could be used. The greater portion of the year the hall is empty. It is or will be heated by steam, and lighted by electricity. The library board now pays $75 a year for the present quarters of the library, out of the $600 which the city appropriates annually. This appropriation could be cut down to $500 and the use of the hall given, and the library would be the gainer in every way.
Another reason why the plan is a good one is that the Waupaca Business College and Academy, which is to occupy the second floor of the Gordon building, next to the Penney building, will, if it is any thing of a success, need additional room within a year, and the room now used by the library would be the most available place for the enlargement. By making the change in the library quarters, therefore, the library would not only get better accommodations, but the room would be made for the expansion of the Business College, which is certain to come.
It would take an additional appropriation of a few hundred dollars to put the City Hall in shape for the library in getting additional shelving, etc., but it would be money well spent.
