COUNCIL MEETING

CITY ATTORNEY L.D. SMITH TELLS ABOUT STREET PAVING

STATE CONDEMNS CITY JAIL

Asks That Old Wooden Cells be Taken Out and Steel Ones Put In

To Place Lights on Lake and on Flaggs Hill – Other Business

At the meeting of the city council held on Tuesday evening a communication from City Attorney L.D. Smith, in regard to the proposed paving to be done in the city next summer, was read.  Mr. Smith says the city engineer should prepare plans and specifications of the proposed paving jobs, and submit them to the council, at which time they can be adopted or rejected, and advised that this work be done by the city engineer and the matter taken up at the first January meeting.

A petition was before the council asking that a street light be placed on the corner of Waupaca and Pine Streets.  Another petition asked that a “Stop” sign be placed where the highway crosses the Soo line at the viaduct.  Another petition, signed by some of the property owners on Granite Street asked that the council, revoke their action, by which that street was ordered paved.  The petitions were referred to the Board of Public Works.

A communication from the State Board of Control says that the two wooden cells now used, should be removed and steel cells put in their place and an inflammable door placed beneath the cells.

The council authorized the placing of lights on either Mirror or Shadow lakes, depending on where the skating rink is located, and also the placing of lights on Flaggs Hill.

The city treasurer’s report showed that there was at the present time in the school and general funds a total of $5758.78.

In addition to the above matters the pay roll and the usual number of bills were allowed.
