A GREAT SHOWING

The display of vegetables at J.E. Cristy’s store last week Thursday, Friday and Saturday, was simply immense.  There was not only a large showing, but the quality was as fine as could be asked for.  One farmer, Mr. Rosenthal, who lives east of the city, near the brick yard, brought in forty-eight varieties of vegetables. The display was larger than that at the Amherst fair last week, and about as large as is usually shown at the Weyauwega fair.  It was an eye-opener for those people, if any there are, who thought Waupaca County could not raise fine vegetables.  The potato display was better and as large as that at the state fair. It certainly was a great success.  The prize winners were:

For the largest and best variety of kinds of vegetables raised by one farmer:

First prize – Chas. Rosenthal, forty-eight varieties.

            Second prize – Equally divided between C.C. Boyce, Thirty-one varieties;

                        G. Ruder, twenty –four varieties.

For half bushel of largest and best potatoes (one variety):

First prize – Mose Leary, Monroe Pride.

Second prize – Wm. Smith, Gold Coin.

For the best showing of fruit:

First prize – Ezra Townsend, twenty-six varieties.

Second prize – H.B. Johnson, nineteen varieties.

For the five largest and best apples of one variety:

First prize – John Hansen, McMahon.

Second prize – J.I. Knight, McMahon.

For the five largest ears of corn – Oscar Smith, Yellow Dent.

For the five largest sugar beets – G.B. Bryant.

CRISTY’S FAIR

A Complete Success – Wonderful Showing at the Fruit and Vegetable Contest

Last week Thursday, Friday and Saturday, persons going by or going into J.E. Cristy’s store no doubt wondered if the horticultural annex to the state Fair had been moved to Waupaca.  The exhibit of vegetables and fruit brought out many contestants in response to Mr. Cristy’s attractive advertisements and generous offers.  The exhibits were most excellent and attracted the attention of many.  A traveling man from a neighboring state was surprised and could hardly believe that such fine apples could be raised in this section of Wisconsin.  And the corn, potatoes and other vegetables were as fine as any section in the United States can produce.  “Only think,” said he, “sugar beets at five pounds each”, “and potatoes what would make a gentleman just over from the Emerald Isle smile.  Such agricultural exhibits are the best advertisement for soil possibilities that can be devised.  Your old ‘Indian Lands’ are not to be sneezed at I reckon.”

On Saturday morning Mr. Cristy appointed Sam Chandler, John Pinkerton and the horticultural editor judges of exhibits.  No harder job ever struck a bunch of judges, and they were inclined to think at first glance that every article was worth a blue ribbon.  However, after carefully considering the offerings the work was completed, but those gentlemen felt convinced that with only one or two exceptions every article was entitled to honorable mention, and that is why we take pleasure in giving the name of every exhibitor.  Following are the names and exhibits:
