A GREAT SHOWING
The
display of vegetables at J.E. Cristy’s store last week Thursday, Friday and
Saturday, was simply immense. There was
not only a large showing, but the quality was as fine as could be asked
for. One farmer, Mr. Rosenthal, who
lives east of the city, near the brick yard, brought in forty-eight varieties
of vegetables. The display was larger than that at the

First prize – Chas. Rosenthal, forty-eight varieties.
Second prize – Equally divided between C.C. Boyce, Thirty-one varieties;
G. Ruder, twenty –four varieties.
For half bushel of largest and best potatoes (one variety):
First prize – Mose Leary, Monroe Pride.
Second prize – Wm. Smith, Gold Coin.
For the best showing of fruit:
First prize – Ezra Townsend, twenty-six varieties.
Second prize – H.B. Johnson, nineteen varieties.
For the five largest and best apples of one variety:
First prize – John Hansen, McMahon.
Second prize – J.I. Knight, McMahon.
For the five largest ears of corn – Oscar Smith, Yellow Dent.
For the five largest sugar beets – G.B. Bryant.

CRISTY’S FAIR
A Complete Success – Wonderful Showing at the Fruit and Vegetable Contest
Last
week Thursday, Friday and Saturday, persons going by or going into J.E. Cristy’s store no doubt wondered if the horticultural annex
to the state Fair had been moved to Waupaca.
The exhibit of vegetables and fruit brought out many contestants in
response to Mr. Cristy’s attractive advertisements
and generous offers. The exhibits were
most excellent and attracted the attention of many. A traveling man from a neighboring state was
surprised and could hardly believe that such fine apples could be raised in

On Saturday morning Mr. Cristy appointed Sam Chandler, John Pinkerton and the horticultural editor judges of exhibits. No harder job ever struck a bunch of judges, and they were inclined to think at first glance that every article was worth a blue ribbon. However, after carefully considering the offerings the work was completed, but those gentlemen felt convinced that with only one or two exceptions every article was entitled to honorable mention, and that is why we take pleasure in giving the name of every exhibitor.
