WHERE IS ROB RUTHERFORD
Just a note, “Don’t open tomorrow”, is what was found on the counter of the Rutherford saloon when Charles Bowers, who was tending bar, entered at 1 o’clock Wednesday morning. Bowers was called about that time and notified that Robert and Jack Rutherford intended leaving on the midnight train. He went down to the saloon and found a sadly disordered condition of affairs. From appearances it looked as if a rough hose had been in progress. Picture frames broken, bottles strewn about and empty shelves greeted the view. From those conversant with the facts it was learned that a general cut rate sale of liquors prevailed during the evening; prices seemed to cut no figure. One barrel of whiskey which had not been opened had entirely disappeared. It was valued at $130, but the price paid by the purchaser is not stated. Wednesday morning Mr. Bowers made an attempt to get Wm. Rutherford but the wires being down on account of the storm he could not be reached at Rhinelander where he was last heard from. It is learned that the Rutherford’s purchased tickets for Minneapolis and took the train. Robert Rutherford had stated to friends that he intended leaving on the first of July but they thought he was only talking. Mr. Bowers intends to take out a government license and open the saloon. The city license runs till the ninth of July and probably by that time Wm. Rutherford will be at home.
