TO BE REOPENED

The Y.M.C.A. Rooms on Jefferson Street Will Be Opened.

At the meeting of the board of directors of the Young Men’s Christian Association, held last week Thursday, it was decided to make an effort to raise enough money by popular subscription to warrant the hiring of a general secretary who shall keep the rooms open every afternoon and evening and devote all of his time to the work.  Henry Lewis was elected general secretary, and will assume the duties of the place next week.  It will take a few days to get the rooms cleaned up, and in shape, but it is expected that by September 16, they will be opened and ready for business.

On Friday and Saturday, members of the finance committee secured pledges to the extent of $304, and also the promise of a number of new members.  One business man gave $25, twenty gave $10, fourteen gave $5, and others made smaller contributions.  Fifty dollars more could be used to advantage.  It is confidently expected that there will be a hundred members at $3 per year each, making total receipts exceeding $600.

A basketball team will probably be organized in the near future, and a handball court laid out within a few weeks.  Other gymnasium apparatus will be added as it can be afforded, and every effort made to make the rooms as pleasant for the young men of the city as is possible.

There will be a general meeting of the Association on Thursday evening, Sept. 12, at the Association rooms, to which every member, present and prospective, and all donors to the fund, are invited to be present.  Four members of the board of directors, and also other officers are to be elected.  A large attendance is desired.

On Tuesday evening, Sept. 10, at the home of Mrs. Page Knight, the members of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Y.M.C.A. will hold a meeting, at which it is earnestly requested that all members turn out.
