GOLDBERG AND THE NEWALDS DISCHARGED

The preliminary examination in the case of the state vs. L.J. Newalkd, E.M. Newald and B.M. Goldberg, charged with burning the opera house at Gillett on May 31, was commenced Thursday at the courthouse in Oconto before County Judge H.F. Jones and terminated at 10:30 Friday morning, when the defendants were discharged there being insufficient evidence to hold them to trial.

A great many witnesses were examined but there was no testimony whatever to show that the building was set on fire by any of the defendants, the evidence proving that neither of the Newalds were in Gillett at the time the opera house burned, while there was no testimony connecting Mr. Goldberg with the crime.

The case was prosecuted by District Attorney J.B. Chase and the defendants were represented by Attorneys D.G. Classon of Appleton and V.J. O’Kelliher of this city.  At the conclusion of the examination the Messrs. Newald and Goldberg were heartily congratulated by the large number present. – Oconto Enterprise.
