GETS NINETY DAYS

“MA” HENJUM OF WEYAUWEGA GOES TO WORKHOUSE

ALSO DRAWS $500 FINE

In Answer to Plea for Leniency Judge Says Women Who Violate Law Take Same Chances As Men

Appleton Man Gets 6 Months, Dale Man 4.

Five persons in federal court at Milwaukee Wednesday were sentenced to the Milwaukee house of correction for violations of the federal prohibition law.

Mrs. Henrietta Henjun, owner of a saloon at Weyauwega, was sentenced to three months and a fine of $500 after the federal jury had found her guilty. Richard Wilke, bartender for Mrs. Henjun, was sentenced to serve thirty days after he had pleaded guilty to a charge of sale.

A plea for leniency on the part of attorneys for Mrs. Henjun caused Judge Geiger to declare that a woman who violates the law takes the same chances of imprisonment as a male violator.

During the trial Mrs. Henjun admitted that she had operated a saloon for more than fourteen years.  She said that the Weyauwega place was sold to the bartender, Wilke, previous to the visit made by the federal prohibition agents.  The agents testified that she was in the bar room when the drinks were sold.

Four who had pleaded not guilty, when arraigned Wednesday appeared and changed their pleas to guilty.  Joseph Schrattz was fined $200.  Joseph Becker, Appleton, received six months and George Books, Dale, four months.

The petit jury, which has been in session since Monday morning, was excused by Judge Geiger until Tuesday, Feb. 9.  During the short session of the jury twenty-one persons were sentenced to serve terms in the house of correction at Milwaukee.
