ADMITS ROBBING STATION

Archie Yankee, Nineteen Years Old Admits Robbing the Fremont Station

on Anniversary of Fremont Wreck

The reported hold-up of Archie Yankee, night operator at Fremont station as reported by him to police at Waupaca, Neenah and his superiors at division headquarters on the morning of Thursday, September 5, on the exact anniversary of the wreck of the Velvet Special at that place last year brought special agent Dunn on train No. 1, and  he heard Yankee’s detailed account of the robbery by which he made out that he had been compelled to hand over the money in the till amounting to $142.35 to the two men whom Yankee described as one being very short and one very tall.

After listening to the account and taking note of the boy’s appearance, as he was telling his story, Mr. Dunn became convinced that Yankee was trying to cover up something.  Mr. Dunn came to Waupaca and stated his belief to Sheriff Flanagan and Deputy Arnold and it was decided to send the latter to interview the young man who was suspected of robbing the cash drawer and trying to distract attention from himself by making a story implicating others as the robbers.

When Deputy Arnold arrived at the Fremont station, he asked Yankee to again recount his story and then advised him to make a clean breast of it if he was guilty as he was suspected of being and would be placed under arrest anyway.

Yankee who is nineteen, concluded to do as advised and admitted that he had robbed the depot and had hid the money.  He accordingly led the way to where he had the  money and turned over the $142.35 to Deputy Arnold and accompanied him to Waupaca where he was placed in jail and where he wrote a complete statement and admitting his guilt that evening.

Saturday morning Yankee was taken before Police Justice Nordvi where he waived examination and was bound over to circuit court and remanded to jail but it is understood that he will go before Judge Park in the near future, plead guilty and receive sentence.
