THE CURLING CLUB

The Waupaca Curling Club organized for the season last Saturday night, by electing the following officers:

                        President – A.W. Hollenbeck

                        Vice President – A.M. Chandler

                        Secretary – Frank Whipple

                        Treasurer – E.B. Knapp

It was decided to rent the opera house for the season, if it could be had for a reasonable price, and negotiations are now pending.  The others were made a committee to receive new members, dues, etc., and to make all the arrangements for the opera house, lights, etc.  The dues were fixed at $3 for the season.

It is expected that the club will send at least four rinks to the bonspiel to be held at Milwaukee this winter, and by commencing the practice work early in the season, there no reason why they shouldn’t bring back several prizes.  They were beaten by very small scores when a St. Paul last winter, and usually by the clubs which had been practicing several months before the bonspiel, whereas the local curlers had less than one month’s preliminary work.

Appleton has organized a curling club and it is more than likely that there will be an interstate contest before the season closes, with competitors from Milwaukee, Cambria, Portage, Appleton and Waupaca.

There is no finer winter sport than curling.  In addition to being highly scientific, it is active, quick work, and splendid exercise, and practically out door exercise at that.  It has all the exciting features of football, with none of its dangers.  It is better exercise than skating or snow shoeing, as it brings all the muscles of the body into play.  It is not an expensive game; a set of curling stones generally costs about $16 and the dues of $3 for a winter’s sport, are certainly not extravagant.

The Waupaca club has already about twenty-five members, and it is hoped will have at least a dozen new members this year.

Two games were played on the ice on Big Lake, Thanksgiving day, the scores being as follows:

                                                                        MORNING GAME

Knapp; Sturtevant; Knudsen; McCullough; Williams, skip – 12.

Burbank; Hoffmann; Lea; A.M. Chandler; S.S. Chandler, Jr., skip – 8

                                                                        AFTERNOON GAME

            Stinchfield; Knudsen ….
