GIRL SCOUTS OF WAUPACA TELL WHY THEY ARE

BOY SCOUT MOVEMENT WELL KNOWN,

SO GIRLS TELL FACTS ABOUT THEIR ORGANIZATION

(By Charlotte Peterson)

“Scouts” and “Camp” are synonymous.  It is the natural thing for the Boy Scouts of Waupaca to go camping in the summer.  Then, why not Girl Scouts?

Few Know of Move Here

So few people know that we have a Girl Scout troop in Waupaca.  It is by no means a new innovation.

Our troop has been existent for more than three years.  We have had candy sales and movie benefits with painful regularity.  And yet when we marched in our uniforms on Memorial Day, a very small percentage of Waupaca people knew who we were or what we represented.

In a town where the Boy Scouts are recognized as a group, the citizens are ignorant of a similar movement for the girls.

32 in Local Group

Thirty-two girls are benefited by scout work.  They obey the laws, keep the promise, and live up to the code of the organization, and are the better for it.  The Girl Scouts organization creates a feeling of fellowship among the girls.  They range in age from Sixth graders to Juniors in high school, and despite the difference in their ages, they are all bound together in loyal sisterhood. From the oldest Eagle down to the youngest Chipmunk, each girl likes and admires every other Scout individually.  And they all love and respect their leader, Captain Salan, who is largely responsible for the success of the troop.

We Go Camping, Too

So we are Scouts, as well as the boys.  Likewise we are going to camp.  Together with the girls of the Young Women’s Club, at Neenah, we will camp at Onaway Island, Chain o’ Lakes, for 10 days, commencing July 12.

And if, next Thursday morning, you see 32 girls, clad in green uniforms, leave the court house square for their highly anticipated outing, can you not summon for us a little of that pride you usually reserve for the Boy Scouts?
