OBITUARY
Joel O. Brown died at his residence on Fulton Street in this city, April 5, 1902 of consumption. He had been ill for about nine months and gradually failed during the winter, but as the spring warmth came on he rapidly declined and departed in peace, perfectly conscious, at 10:30, Saturday morning. The deceased was born in Tanga, Sweden, Dec. 14, 1877. He came to America at fifteen years of age, and has resided in this vicinity for the last nine years, working at his trade as a blacksmith. He was buried in the cemetery beside his two sisters. One brother Fred lives in this city. His aged mother still survives at the old home in Sweden. He was married oct. 13, 1900, to Miss Theresa Walstadt, who so early widowed, well deserves the sympathy and love extended by her circle of friends who appreciate her tender care and unfailing courage and patience in this severe trial.
In the beginning of his sickness he was unreconciled to giving up life so early; but after the conversion of his wife and in fact impelled by her sudden sickness he began a life of prayer which about a month before his death eventuated in a clear and joyful Christian experience. The change was very marked, resulting in peace, love and even joy. When near the end he frequently expressed his desire to depart and be with Christ and greatly enjoyed the reading of the Bible and the prayers of his friends. The funeral was from the house at ten o’clock, Tuesday. The music was by members of the M.E. choir, Rev. G.W. White officiated. Mrs. Brown will spend some days resting in the home of her friends, Mr. and Mrs. W.N. Van Epps and probably will live in our city, where she is so favorably known.
