Andrew B. Chesley
Andrew B. Chesley, a gentleman quite well known in Stevens Point, this city, having been his home for the past three yes, died at Fremont, Waupaca County, at 10 o’clock last Thursday evening, and the announcement of his death came as a great surprise to nearly all who knew him. Mr. and Mrs. Chesley went to Fremont two weeks ago last Saturday to visit among relatives. He had not been in good health for a long time, notwithstanding that his appearance indicated otherwise, as he was a large, fleshy man, and while there he was taken seriously ill, but his condition was not considered dangerous until the day of his death, which was due to softening of the brain.
The deceased was born at Waukesha, March 5, 1845, and made that city his home until the breaking out of the war, when he enlisted and was assigned to Co. D 1st Regiment, Iowa Cavalry. After returning home he located in Waupaca County, and for about twenty years was engaged in the hardware business at Royalton. He was married in 1870 to Miss Rachael Olson, of Iola, who died in 1880 having four children, three of whom followed their mother bout three years later, their death being caused by diphtheria. In 1882 Mr. Chesley was again married, his second wife being Miss Maria Billington, of Fremont, who survives him, together with one daughter by his first wife, Mrs. Wendell F. Mersch, who together with her husband is teaching school in the eastern part of this county. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. S.M. Dunlap, of Waukesha, who is an invalid. J.P. Chesley, of this city, is a distant relative. About ten years ago Mr. Chesley moved to Plover, where he resided until he came to Stevens Point, since which time his home was on Superior Avenue, on the West Side. After disposing of his business interests at Royalton, he retired from active work and was only employed occasionally since coming to this county. He was a man of good education, social disposition and a good husband, friend and father.
The funeral took place at Fremont at 2:30 o’clock Sunday afternoon, Rev. Father Hopkins, of the Episcopal church of Waupaca officiating, interment being int eh village cemetery at Fremont. Both Mr. and Mrs. Marsch were present. Mrs. Chesley will remain in that village to make her home with her father. The deceased carried an insurance of $1,000 in the Northwestern of Minneapolis. – Stevens Point Gazette.
The death of A.B. Chesley removes the last of four brothers, formerly businessmen in this city. They were Charles, James A., Augusus, and Andrew.
