J.E. CRISTY DIED VERY SUDDENLY SUNDAY NIGHT
FOR MORE THAN TWENTY YEARS AN OUTSTANDING
CHURCH AND SUNDAY SCHOOL WORKER
Joseph Elmore Cristy was born Jan. 1, 1865, at Johnson, Vermont. He moved at an early age with his parents to Ringwood, Ill., where he attended the public schools, and later, Valparaiso University.
When he returned from college he became associated with his father in general merchandising, later purchasing his father’s interest and establishing a bank in connection.
On Sept. 30th, 1885, he was married to Flora Harsh of Ringwood. She passed away Oct. 14, 1920. To this union five children were born: Carroll, of Waupaca; Harry, of New London; Mrs. Mae Williams, of Waupaca; Kenneth and Jay, of Ringwood, Ill., all of whom survive, also eight grandchildren.
In 1904 he moved to Waupaca and became engaged in the business which he conducted until his death. In 1910 he opened another store in New London.
In February, 1923, he married Miss Beatrice McCallen who died the following October.
Mr. Cristy was superintendent of Methodist Sunday School nearly the entire time he resided in Waupaca. He was one of the most loyal supporters of all church activities. His work in Waupaca County Sunday School Association, his support of Camp Cleghorn Assembly, were other avenues for this man to exert an influence for the betterment of the community.
He was a keen careful businessman and was ever alert to the minutest detail of the several departments of his mercantile establishments.
For several yeas he was honored by a place on the city council and was president of the Waupaca Chamber of Commerce for more than one term. Through his Hustler clubs and vegetable fairs he was able for years to make the name of his business a household name in the schools and the homes of all the territory tributary to the city where his store was located.
The funeral was held Wednesday at the late residence, Rev. Frank C. Richardson conducting the service. Rev. W.P. Leek of Fond du Lac, district superintendent, spoke briefly. E.P. Sill, E.A. Hannon, C. Kreunen, L.A. Olson S.A. Kratz and J.T. Bristow acted as pall bearers.
