William Deering

In His Ninetieth Year
Williard Deering, son of Hartley and Susan Deering, was born in Aroostook county, Maine, March 20th, 1837, and departed this life in Belmont, Portage County, Wisconsin, Oct. 29, 1926, being 89 years, 6 months and 29 days of age. His father died when Willard was but four years old after which he lived with an uncle for a time until his mother married again. At the age of thirteen he began making his own way in the world being employed by neighbors. At fourteen he was in the woods of Maine. He came to Wausau, Wis., in 1857, being but twenty years of age, where he was employed “running logs” on the river and in the sawmill. Two years later he went to Superior where he did teaming. It was from here that he enlisted in the Civil War on Aug. 27, 1864, being assigned to Co. A. 42nd Wis. V.I. During he war he was stationed at Cairo, Ill., on guard duty. His discharge from service is dated may, 1865. He returned to Parfreyville, Waupaca County, at once to rejoin his wife, Irene Collier Deering, to whom he was married on June 21, 1863. Together they took up their residence on unbroken soil at his late home. To this union eight children were born, as follows: George Judson, Susan, Thomas, Vinna, Artie and Bessie who died in infancy and another child who died unnamed. George, the oldest son, died in 1904. Mrs. Deering preceded him in death may 11, 1919. Those to immediately survive are Mrs. Fred Dopp of Almond town, Portage County; Vinnie, Mrs. Walter Shilston of Montana; Thomas, of town of Rose; Artie, Mrs. R.H. Mathe, of Florida. Fifteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren also survive. Funeral services were conducted at the home Monday at 1:30 p.m., Rev. Trester Oosterhuis, officiating.
