MAN DIES FROM
ESCAPING COAL GAS
Is Found Suffocated
in Potato Car at Scandinavia
At
Scandinavia, last Saturday, a man giving the name of Oka
Granlasia, was found in a potato car so badly suffocated that he died the
following day. Deceased left Stevens
Point last Friday evening in one of Alois Firkus’ potato cars, which he was to
care for between there and Chicago. He
came to Stevens Point last fall
with a number of men who were sent there by a Chicago
agency under promise of securing work from the John Week lumber company, and
Mr. Firkus was giving him a chance to return home by allowing him to go down in
charge of the car. Before the man left
there he was given full instruction how to manage the heating in the car and
also in regard to the doors. When the
car was on the siding at Scandinavia; however, it was
discovered to be on fire, and when the doors were opened the man was found in
an unconscious condition. He was
immediately removed, but died as above stated.
