December 5, 1907

Ernest Gruner, a prominent citizen and pioneer resident of the town of Dayton, passed away at his home in Crystal River Dec. 5, 1907.  The deceased was born in Wenshelburg, Prussia, Aug. 26, 1829.  At the age of thirteen he was apprenticed, and the miller trade was assigned him.  After learning this trade, he entered the military service, and his discharge papers show he served with distinction.

He immigrated to the United States in 1856, living one year in Milwaukee, from which city he moved to Dayton and entered the employ of Lathrop West, as a miller.

In 1865 he formed a partnership with August Oertel, buying the interest of Lathrop west and later buying out Mr. Oertel’s interest and continued in active business until 1892 when he retired.

In 1897 he suffered an injury which confined him to his bed and though enduring great pain, was patient to the last.

He leaves to mourn his death, his widow, Mrs. Eva Gruner, and five children:  Mrs. Kate Ernest of Dayton, W.A. Gruner of Ladysmith, Harry E. runner, Crystal River, Frank Gruner of Portage and Mrs. A.C. Forest of Superior.  The many friends of the deceased extend their sympathy to the bereaved family.
