AGED WAUPACA PIONEER
DIES SATURDAY EVE
MRS. SARAH JANE MANCHESTER
CAME TO WAUPACA SIXTY-FIVE YEARS AGO –
FUNERAL MONDAY
The
passing of Mrs. Sarah Manchester last Saturday evening removed from our midst
one of our oldest citizens. She was
taken ill about six weeks ago and rapidly failed, due to a general collapse,
caused by old age.
Sarah
J. Vaughan was born at Springville, N.Y.,
Aug. 23, 1833. She came to Waupaca in 1856 and taught school
in Lind. In 1858 she was married to
Darwin L. Manchester and lived in this city continuously till his death
twenty-six years ago. Since that time
she has spent her summers here but has lived with her children during the cold months.
Deceased
is survived by two children, John JD. Manchester,
who is a surgeon in the Navy, and Mrs. F.A. Lowell of Rhinelander, a sister,
Mrs. J.H. Woodnorth, of Milwaukee, a niece, Miss Blanche Woodnorth, of
Milwaukee, and a nephew, James W. Bemis, of this city.
Mrs.
Manchester was the oldest member of the Baptist church, was a charter member of
the woman’s Relief Corps and was a member of the Eastern Star Lodge. She was an active member in the church and
the Relief Corps until a few years ago when her age prevented these activities.
The
past winter was spent in San Diego, Calif.,
with her son, who is (illegible on copy) of the U.S. Naval Hospital. She had spent a happy winter and returned to
her old home the middle of June. Her son
and daughter were at her bedside during her illness.
The
funeral was held Monday afternoon at two o’clock. The services were simple – the reading of the
twenty-third Psalm and a prayer by the Reverend Jacobs of the Baptist church.
