EDWIN W. NELSON DIED TUESDAY -  ILL FOR WEEKS

SERVED ON CITY COUNCIL SIX YEARS,

WAS MAYOR OF HIS HOME CITY FOUR YEARS

 

            Edwin Wilfred Nelson died at a hospital at Oshkosh, Tuesday morning, April 27, after an illness of seven weeks.

            Deceased was born at Waupaca, August 28, 1877, and at time of death was in his forty-ninth years.  He was graduated from Waupaca High School in June, 1894, in his seventeenth year.  Following his graduation he attended Green Bay business college and on finishing a full course became associated with his father, A.G. Nelson, in the lumber, feed and coal business and held the position of secretary-treasurer throughout his business career.

            November 12, 1903, he married Katherine J. Murphy who with one daughter, Josephine, now a junior at University of Wisconsin, mourn this untimely death.

            Deceased was a member of Waupaca city council six years from 1902 to 1908.  He was a member of the Board of Education, 1909 to 1911.  He was mayor of his home city four years from 1918 to 1922.  His record as a city official was an evidence of his faithfulness to detail and a keen sense of business.

            His social connections were with the St. Mark’s church and Knights of Pythias lodge.

            Besides his widow and daughter he is survived by his father, Hon. A.G. Nelson, and brother, Van Nelson, other relatives and many friends.

            The funeral will be held at St. Mark’s church Friday morning at 10 o’clock, Rev. A.L. du Domaine officiating, with interment in Lakeside cemetery.  Those desiring to view the remains should call at the home before 9:45 Friday morning.

END GAME TO BUSINESS MAN AND FORMER MAYOR TUESDAY

 

            Edward Wilfred Nelson was born on August 28, 1877, in the city of Waupaca, and died at an Oshkosh hospital on Tuesday morning, April 27, 1926, at the age of 49 years, eight months and one day.  Death came as a result of a stroke of apoplexy suffered several weeks before.  Following the stroke Mr. Nelson was cared for at his home for several weeks and later, as he showed no improvement, was taken to a hospital in Oshkosh, in the hope that he might find a cure.

            Mr. Nelson spent his boyhood days in Waupaca, and graduated from the Waupaca High School with the class of 1894. He then attended the Green Bay Business College, and after completing a course there, became a member with his father and brother, of the A.G. Nelson Lumber Co.  At the time of his death he was secretary and treasurer of the company.

            Mr. Nelson throughout his life took an active interest in public affairs.  He served as an alderman from his ward in 1902, 03, 04, 05, 06, and 07.  From 1909 to 1911 he served as a member of the Board of Education.

            In 1918 Mr. Nelson was elected Mayor of the city of Waupaca, which office he held with great credit to himself and the city for the following four years.

            He was a member of the local K. of P. lodge, and always took a great interest in this order.  He was also a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal church, and at the time of his death was a vestryman of that church.

            On Nov. 12, 1903, he was united in marriage to Miss Katherine Murphy of Kakoma, Indiana, and Mrs. Nelson with one daughter, Josephine, a student at the University of Wisconsin at Madison survive him.  The others left to mourn their loss are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.G. Nelson, and one brother Van, all of this city.  He had a large circle of friends and acquaintances throughout the state, who will regret his death.

            The funeral will be held from St. Mark’s church at 10:00 on Friday morning, the Rev. F. Alfred L. du Domaine having charge of the services.  Interment will be held in the Lakeside cemetery.  The Knights of Pythias will attend the funeral in a body, and all business places will remain closed between 10:00 and 11:00 o’clock in honor of his memory.

            The remains may be viewed Friday morning at the home until 9:45 o’clock.
