OLE R. OLSON MET DEATH MONDAY

Slips and Falls on Icy Steps and Dies Soon Afterwards

 

            Ole R. Olson, one of Waupaca’s old and respected citizens met with an accident on Monday evening, Feb. 10, about ten o’clock which resulted in his instant death.  His wife had gone to call on a sick neighbor, Mrs. Crampton, and asked him to call for her when he had finished his reading.  As Mr. and Mrs. Olson went to leave the house Mr. Olson slipped on the icy walk and fell backward, striking his head on the steps.  He was removed to his own residence and medical assistance was at once summoned but he died almost immediately.

            Mr. Olson was born in Denmark on October 20, 1831; was educated there in the public schools and an agricultural college; came to Waupaca in 1862 and in August the same year enlisted in Co. G, 21st Wis. Vol. Inft., and served until the close of the war; he returned to Waupaca where he has since made his home.  Mr. Olson was married October 29, 1868, to Mary C., daughter of Louis Behm of the town of Lind.

            He was elected register of deeds of Waupaca county in 1871 and held that office two terms; in 1880 was appointed correspondence clerk in the state land department at Madison which responsible position he filled for eight years; was also city clerk for two terms and alderman two years.  Mr. Olson was engaged in the abstract business many years and was thoroughly posted in all the complicated details of the abstract business.

            House this afternoon at 1:30, Rev. Andreasen speaking, and form the Holy Ghost’s church at two o’clock, Revs. Webster Millar and N.P. Simsonsen speaking.

AN ACCIDENTAL DEATH

 

            Ole R. Olson, without a moment’s warning, forfeited his life by a fall on the sidewalk Monday evening.  Mrs. Olson had gone to Mrs. Crampton’s, a neighbor, to spend the evening, and Mr. Olson went there to accompany her home about 10 o’clock, and when leaving for home, just as t hey came upon the cement walk, Mr. Olson fell backward, striking on his head on the step breaking his neck, and expired instantly.

            Mr. Olson was born in Denmark, Oct. 20, 1841 and came to this country and settled in Waupaca in the year 1862.  In August of the same year he enlisted in Co. G, 21st Wis. Inf. Vol. and served until the close of the war.  On October 29, 1868, he was married to Mary C. Behm.  One child, Louie, was born to them, but passed away some years ago.

            From 1872 to 1876 the deceased was register of deeds of Waupaca county.  They then moved to Madison, where he had a position as correspondence clerk in a land office from 1880 to 1888.  He then moved his family back to Waupaca and was in the abstract and insurance business with Alfred Johnson from the year 1894 to 1905, when he retired.

            For the past two years he has been register in probate and he was also a member of the water works commission.

            Mr. Olson has always been prominent in politics and the news of his death was a shock to the whole city and community, and he will be greatly missed.  He was a member of the D.D.H. Society and of Norden Lodge, I.O.O.F.

                                                                 Besides his wife, he leaves one sister in Texas.  The funeral will be held this afternoon at 1:30 from the house where the services will be conducted by Rev. Andreasen, and at two o’clock from the Holy Ghost church.  Revs. Simonsen and Millar will officiate.  The I.O.O.F. will have charge of the funeral.

            All business places will be closed from 2 to 4 o’clock.

            This community was shocked to learn of the fatal accident that cast a pall over a home in this city Monday evening.

            As Mr. and Mrs. Olson were leaving the house of a neighbor where they had spent the evening. Mr. Olson slipped, striking his head on the porch step breaking his neck and causing instant death.

            Ole R. Olson was born in Denmark Oct. 20, 1841 and came to Waupaca in 1862 and soon after enlisted in Co G. 21st Regiment Inf. and served during the Civil War.  He was held in high esteem by his comrades and members of the G.A.R.

            After the war he was engaged in the abstract business with Chas. Churchill.

            In 1872 he was elected Register of Deeds for Waupaca county serving four years.  From 1880 to 1888 he held a position in the Land Office at Madison, after which time he was for several years again engaged in the abstract business in this city selling his interest some four years ago to his partner, Alfred Johnson.  For the past two years he has held the position of Register of Probate under Judge F.M. Guernsey.

            His death is a great blow to his faithful and esteemed wife and she has the sympathy of the community in her bereavement.  Mr. and Mrs. Olson lost their only child, Ole, some ten years ago just as he was reaching his majority.

            The funeral will be held from the house this afternoon at 1:30 o’clock and from the Holy Ghost church at 2 o’clock p.m.  Rev’s Simonsen, Andreasena nd Millar officiating and the burial will be in charge of Norden Lodge I.O.O.F. of which lodge Mr. Olson was a worthy charter member.
