An Aged Mother Gone
“I love it, I love
it, and who shall dare
To
chide me for loving that old arm chair.”
Departed this life at the family residence in this city on Saturday
night, March
17, 1883, Mrs. Harriet Stetson, aged 70
years.
Mrs.
Harriet Stetson was the mother of H.J. and N.W. Stetson of this city. She was born in Hanover,
Massachusetts, in 1804. Her maiden name was Winslow. In 1828 she married Ira Stetson, and a few
years later removed to Erie county, New York. Four children were born to them – three sons
and one daughter, two of whom only are now living as noted above. The family removed from Erie
county to Wisconsin about
twenty-seven years ago, and have lived in Waupaca county ever since, with the
exception of about three years.
Twenty-one years they have lived in this village and city. The father died about fifteen years ago. The boys have always been devoted to their
mother and solicitous of her welfare.
And she has lived to see them grow up to a full age, prosperous and
energetic businessmen. She has lived
with her son and daughter-in-law (Mr. and Mrs. N.W. Stetson) during the past
three years, and although childish in old age has been fast creeping over her
and feeble health impaired her frame, the pillow has been softened, and she has
received every attention and care calculated to make her short stay on earth
pleasant. But she has gone home to meet
a companion, children and friends gone before.
There stands the vacant chair, and down in the heart are the memories of
that loving mother that will act as a guiding star through life to her loved
ones here below.
The funeral
took place from the house on Monday afternoon, Rev. Edward Jones conducting the
services.
