Will W. Stetson

It is a sad task to pen the words announcing the death of Will Stetson.  After a short siege of consumption, which dates from a hard cold contracted over two years ago, but a confinement to his room of only a few months, he died Sunday morning, March 3d, at four o’clock, aged 29 years.  He was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. N.W. Stetson, and was born at North Collins, Erie County, N.Y. in 1859.  He came to this city with his parents about nine years ago, since which time until the date mentioned he had been in good health, and while not being as strong and robust as some men yet he was full of energy and always busy at some useful occupation.  He was of a quiet, retiring disposition, but was noted for his honesty, integrity and strength of character.  Those who knew him best were strongly impressed with the value of his friendship and manly worth.  He never could forsake a friend. Coming to Waupaca and leaving a sister, no Mrs. Ellen Sherman, behind at the eastern home, he being an only son, and a dutiful one too, was strongly attached to his father and mother, and after his marriage with Miss Glenna (Glennie) Parish, two years and a half ago, home was made pleasant for them there.  The marriage was a happy one and each were warmly devoted to the other. To the father and mother and the loving, faithful wife, the bereavement comes to them with an especial weight of sorrow.  In all his severe sufferings he was uncomplaining, and seemed to think only of the discomforts that his sickness might cause to those around him.  He was resigned to the inevitable and at inst. Was ready to go if it was so willed.  He expressed one regret at not being able to visit his old home east, and sister. He was strongly attached to his attending physician, Dr. Pelton, and the Doctor did everything for him that medical skill could do and also offered every friendly and sympathetic attention possible.  He was conscious to the last and passed over the river – death – as if in silent repose.  The funeral was held from the house on Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Perry Millar offering divine consolation.  The service and song were appropriate and impressive.  A very large concourse of friends and neighbors paid their last tribute of respect by attending the funeral and following the remains to Lake View cemetery where they were laid gently at rest.  The sympathy of all are with the bereaved in their sad hours of affliction and sorrow.
