GEORGE L. THOMPSON

Son of Former Postmaster Thompson Dies at His Home in Berkley, Va.

From the Virginian Pilot, Norfolk, Va., Aug. 29:

George L. Thompson, one of Berkley ward’s best known residents and businessmen, died last evening at 7 o’clock at his residence in Chestnut Street after a lingering illness of more than a year’s duration.

The deceased conducted the only jewelry business in the ward for more than fifteen years, in which he was quite successful in building a large trade and making a host of friends.  He was a member of five orders and in all held positions of trust.  The lodges are:  Lee No. 46; K. of P.; Thomas Jefferson Council No. 100; Junior Order United Americans; Berkley Lodge No. 46, W.W.W.; the order of Ben Hur and the Heralds of Liberty.

Mr. Thompson was 40 years old and a native of Wisconsin, but had been a resident of Berkley ward and Berkley more than 20 years.  He is survived by a widow and three small daughters, his father, Col. E.B. Thompson, of Washington, D.C., a sister, also of that city, and a brother.

The funeral will take place Friday, but the details have not been arranged yet.

His close application to business was perhaps one of the largest contributors to his death.  He went away several weeks ago for his health, but failed to recuperate and returned about ten days ago.

His father arrived here several days ago from Washington and was with his son at the end.

The deceased was a former Waupaca boy, eldest son of E.B. Thompson, long time a postmaster in this city, and who went to Berkley, Virginia with his parents about twenty years ago.  George learned the jewelry business in this city, and when he went to Berkley, Va., he pursued that trade, and a number of years ago bought a business in that city, a suburb of Norfolk, married and settled down, happy and prosperous until called home just in the zenith of his business life.

Mrs. LeGro of this city was an aunt of the deceased.  The sister, Laura Thompson, spent the summer here and arrived home where she lives with her father and younger brother in Washington only a short time before her brother’s death.  Many friends in Waupaca extend to the bereaved their sympathy.
