William Whittington, Sr.

The death of William Whittington of this city occurred Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the home of his son, Joseph Whittington.  His death was the result of tuberculosis of the lungs.  The funeral services were held this afternoon at 2 o’clock, Rev. Johnson of Our Savior’s church officiating.

William Whittington was born in Lancastershire, England, in 1831, and while a boy went to Norway with his father, who was an iron worker.  It was the time of the beginning of the iron mining in Norway and Sweden and experts were brought from England to superintend the melting of the ore.  Mr. Whittington’s father was manager of the smelters for several of the largest mines in Norway and Sweden and taught his son his trade, who remained in Norway until 1880.  He was married in Norway, where all of his children were born.  In 1880 Mrs. Whittington died and he came to this country, and finally settled in Waupaca in 1889, where he has since lived with his son Joseph.  He was the father of twelve children, of whom the following survive him:  Carl, Mrs. T. Watson of Alabama, William and Samuel of Wautoma, Mrs. Johnston of Chicago, and Joseph of this city.

Mr. Whittington, though an old man when he came to the city, made many friends, who will miss him.  He was an entertaining talker and could tell many interesting experiences of his early days.
