A former Waupaca printing office boy, now a prominent lawyer in Boston, Charles R. Brainard, son of Dr. Brainard, of this city, last week obtained a decree in the U.S. Circuit Court, Judge Lowell, against the Boston Herald, for infringement of a patent of his for sorting copy in large printing offices. We have not the space here to try to make our readers understand what the patent its, but suffice it to say that it is one of great convenience and a time saver in large printing offices where the copy of one article is divided among a number of compositors or typesetters. The Herald folks claimed that it was but a mere idea, which is not patentable, but Judge Lowell decides that it is not merely an idea but means are adopted for carrying out the idea, which are patentable.
