Dr. P.J. Christofferson narrowly escaped a very disastrous accident on Saturday night while returning from Fremont.  A bridge was being repaired on the main road between Waupaca and Weyauwega which made it necessary to take a side road and when about four miles from home he encountered an open bridge and escaped landing in the creek bottom, twelve feet below, by running his machine into a pile of stone, badly damaging the machine.  There were no lights or signs to show that the bridge was out and under the circumstance it is a wonder that the occupants of the machine were not killed.

TOWN OFFICERS NEGLIGENT

Dr. Christofferson, by rare presence of mind and with full control of his automobile, narrowly escaped serious injury or death Friday night while running on the Weyauwega road in the southeastern section of the town of Waupaca, by stopping his machine as he had almost reached a point in the road where a culvert had been taken out and had been left unguarded by signs or lights.  He was going down an incline and did not see the cut in the road about eight feet deep, until within a few feet of it and applied the brakes of his car so suddenly that it threw Bob Lea out and the doctor was thrown against the steering wheel with great force.  It develops that this excavation has been there for several days without signs or lights to warn the traveling public, and that several have had narrow escapes in the day time and have kept out of the hole by turning their automobiles in the ditch and tipping over.  The officers of the town of Waupaca should take steps immediately to repair the road or put up sufficient safeguards, or there will be serious accident and damages to pay.

CHRISTOFFERSON’S CLOSE CALL

Friday night while Dr. Christofferson and Robert Lea were returning from Fremont they found the main road closed and were obliged to run into the road in front of Chas. Pohl and Henry Dahlman.  When they started down a steep decline they discovered something wrong seventy or eighty feet ahead and Dr. set the brake, but the machine was not stopped till they had encountered a pile of stone and Lea was pitched over the front of the machine to the ground.  The machine was injured by striking the large boulders, but these saved a worse catastrophe, that of going down into the creek where a new stone arch bridge was under construction.  No danger signal had been hung out by the contractor and the town is liable for the damages sustained by the occupants of the car, and it is understood that a settlement will be made by the town board of Waupaca, as they admit negligence of the contractor.

Dr. Christofferson authorizes the statement that he has so far recovered from his recent collision with Mr. Proctor that he is able to give his personal attention to his practice.
