Houses Numbered

But the house numbers.  They are numbered on the Minneapolis plan.  Fulton street, running east and west, and Main street running north and south as the division starting point.  The even numbers are on one side of the street, and the odd on the other.  Each lot or store in the business portion takes a number.  Each 33 feet of the residence portion is numbered in measurement, and where there is a house located an aluminum or glass number is placed thereon.  The way the numbers read, in this manner:  Holly’s would be 100 North Main and Verson’s 101 North Main, so on till next block.  Whittington’s would be 201 and the Dane’s Home being a double block would be 301-303 North Main.  Barrington’s would be 101 South Main and Vosburg’s corner would be 201 South Main.

All west of Verson’s and Barrington’s on Fulton street numbered alternately, even on the left and odd on the right going west; thus Nels Gunderson’s place is designated as 108 West Fulton Street, and Jensen’s exchange store in Calkins’ block 109.  All east of Main would be such and such numbers designated as East Fulton St.  The same is true of Union, Badger, and all other streets running east of Main.  The street across the stone bridge is designated as Water until the Danish M.E. Church is reached then it would be Mill street because there are no streets of those names running west of Main.  Granite street running west of Main would not be West Granite because there is no such street east of Main.

The gentlemen have met with a ready response to the numbering of the houses, and later representatives of the Directory company will come on to take enumeration of the people of the city.
