Veleker said this is a different design and is what should have originally been designed for the city. “We didn’t pay anyone to have it done,” he said of the rampway design.
He further stated that much of what has been paid to Boldt is for work that would have been necessary with this design as well.
Because of the amount it will cost for the rampway, the city may not be able to do the other parts of the proposed Phase I project.
Boldt’s bid for he amphitheater was $17,162, while its bids were $12,676 for the canoe launch and $9,474 for the fish outcrops.
The contract awarded to Boldt does not include those part of the project.
Veleker told the council that he received an unsolicited telephone call from a different contractor who said equipment and labor could be donated for those parts of the project, with the city only having to pay the cost of the materials.
Mayor Brian Smith was concerned about the city not being able to do those parts of the project, saying the city is not getting the same project it approved last year for the same amount of money.
Schreiber/Anderson, Boldt, K. Singh & Associates and Jewel & Associates are the four firms that were involved in the project so that the amphitheater, canoe launch and fish outcrops may yet be included.
Just how soon construction will begin on the rampway was not known, but the contract states that it must be completed by Nov. 1.
