BAD WRECK AT CRUSHER PLANT
Monday about five o’clock p.m., without any warning, as engineer DeLeary at the Granite Crusher plant was about to see to things about his engine when there was a sudden crash and a flame of fire shot out from the furnace under the boiler and that was all he knew about it for some little time, except that his hands and face were badly burned. He was assisted to his home in the Rhode house near the Central depot, and Dr. Christofferson was summoned who dressed the burns. He said the burns, although painful, did not appear to be very deep and he thought in a week the man would be able to be out.
On a survey of the accident it was found that the whole brick work holding the boiler had apparently given way no doubt due to the frequent jars from the blasts on the past summer and fall, and the sudden giving away of the brick work holding the fire box and large boiler caused a lurch and perhaps some of the steam pipes broke letting steam or water on the hot coals with generated gas causing the burst of flame which injured his face and hands.
Laborers were at work the next morning clearing away the debris after which the boiler and fire box will be reset and suitable repairs and connections made.
