Medical and Dental History
By N.J. Jardine, D.D.S.
Very little is known of the early doctors and dentists in the Waupaca area as there is almost no mention of them in the early histories.
However, the first doctor to practice medicine in Waupaca was the Rev. and Dr. Cutting Marsh. He was also one of the great Protestant missionaries of the Northwest. He was born in Vermont in 1880 [has to be a miss-type] and graduated from the Andover Theological Seminary in 1827. He helped to establish Presbyterian churches in Neenah, Appleton, Fond du Lac and Beaver Dam.
He moved to Waupaca from Green Bay in 1852 where he purchased a tract of land to make a home for his family. He organized a church at Waupaca and Pine River.
He prepared himself as a physician with medical studies while in college. After he discontinued preaching he resumed the practice of medicine in the surrounding country and was widely known as Dr. Marsh. He passed away on the morning of July 4th, 1872.
