THE WAUPACA REPUBLICAN

AMICABLY SETTLED.

The Jail Building Committee Make a Settlement With the Contractors.

On Saturday G. J. Carter, president of the Champion Iron Co., of Kenton, Ohio, representing the main contractors for building the new county jail, was in the city and met with J. M. Ware the chairman of the county board, E. H. Palmer, M. L. Munsert, J. W. Steiger and J. W. Bower, and held a consultation with reference to a settlement with the contractors and acceptance of the new jail.  Mr. Carter was well pleased with the work of Mr. Gminer who had the mason and Mr. Knudsen the carpenter.  The committee, who has given the work close attention throughout the progress of the same, were satisfied with the work except they would like to have had the jail completed so they could have rendered a report to the county board when in session in November.  Mr. Carter finally agreed to discount $153 on his part of the steel and iron work contract and call everything square.  This discount or rebate it is learned is to go to pay for superintency of construction by the committee of county board.  This the committee acceded to and they then accepted the job.

The REPUBLICAN editor met Mr. Carter Saturday evening and he said he was pleased with Waupaca, and said it would be hard to find a more substantial and pleasantly located court house and jail in the country. He said:  “Sometime when you get a waterworks system you can have one of the most modern little cities in the country.”

The Champion Iron Company has the contract for building a new eighteen thousand dollar jail for Stevens Point, and he said business would call  him this way again next summer, and as he had been informed about our wonderful chain of lakes, the Veterans’ Home, etc., he would avail himself of the privilege of visiting them.

Sheriff elect Munsert will arrange to have the jail thoroughly dried out in time to move in right after Christmas.

The REPUBLICAN in giving a little write up of the jail last week forgot to mention that it was wired throughout for the modern electric lights.
