THE WAUPACA REPUBLICAN May 15, 1903 LAKE VIEW CEMETERY. New Part Platted – A Memorial Square. The cemetery committee have recently had the new cemetery platted. There is to be a square or shady spot in the center of the nearly eight acres which was so generously donated by our old pioneer townsman, Evan Townsend, who is now in his 87th year. The city may sometime erect a memorial tablet on this square in commemoration of Mr. Townsend’s generosity. The original city of the dead was not called “Lake View”. It was simply “Waupaca Cemetery”, and contains five or six acres. No doubt when it was laid out, in 1850, it was thought to be large enough for all time. Lots were placed at the uniform price of $4.00. But about twenty one years ago the need of more ground was apparent and a tract of seven or eight acres was purchased by Evan Townsend, partly bordering and overlooking Shadow Lake, and when it was laid out and platted it being practically an extension of the old cemetery, it was called “Lake View Cemetery”. In those twenty-one years, although some of the choice lots were placed as high as twenty-five dollars, nearly all, especially the level lots, are taken and even many of the sloping lots, which are also pretty, have been selected. But the city foresaw again that it was only a question of time when more land would be required and the cemetery committee had or was about to approach Mr. Townsend as to his price for land on the west of the new tract, when last summer the city fathers were presented with a warrantee deed by Mr. Townsend of the land in question, which as we said before, has just been platted. Two years ago the cemetery committee extended water pipes from the main on South Main Street to the cemetery, which has proven a great convenience. Dr. McNaughton, chairman, says there is some talk of extending the system somewhat this season to better accommodate the cemetery. The city and many lot owners have taken much pride in the cemetery and there are many fine monuments and memorial tablets there, among them many of our own beautiful granite product near the city and northern part of the county. No prettier location was ever devised and we are glad to see such mutual interest taken to make it beautiful. It is the only tribute that can be paid to the loved ones gone before. |
