WAUPACA REPUBLICAN

WATER  O.K.  AGAIN

The editor took a trip over to Mirror Lake park Tuesday and saw street commissioner Craig and his crew of laborers busy trimming the trees and making a general slick up of Waupaca’s first and only park grounds which came about because of the change for a pure water supply.  And speaking of water, the REPUBLICAN scribe meandered down to the electric centrifugal pumping station and found supt., of water works C. W. Nelson examining the “sand trap” to see if it was catching the sand, as that commodity is what has caused so much trouble with the interior mechanism of the new pump.  The sand trap is simply a section of a ten or twelve inch pipe fastened to the supply pipe just inside the basement of the pumping station.  It hangs downward two or here feet and as the water is drawn from the wells and passes over “thimble” or traps the sand or gravel that happens to be sucked up drops down into this receptacle instead of entering the pump.  To remove the sand there is a cap on the bottom which can be unscrewed with a wrench.  An examination showed about one quart of sand and gravel which had collected there during the past week showing that in a month or year a vast amount must have been forced through the pump which material easily can work havoc as it did.  The trap may catch all the heaviest and gritty particles and save the expense of new casting as before.  Supt. Nelson feels quite confident that future trouble may be averted.  But he said that the pumps need more constant attention as to ore frequent oiling than engineer Kirchoffer really conveyed to the council would be necessary however a longer glass oil tube and injector in one part of the pump would help move in the direction named.

Mr. Nelson arranged a long hose with pipe and faucet attachment so as to furnish pure water for the E. F. U. picnic at Mirror Lake Park.  The same arrangement to be furnished for future picnics, until such time as the city gets able to have a fountain, and something better in the park.
