Berries

 

            A.D. “Cherry Tree”, alias “Strawberry” and “Apple Tree” Barnes after having an uninterrupted season of selling apple trees and strawberries, which latter season is still on, has made announcement that his cherries are now ripe and ready for market.  Verily Barnes is right in it.  Mr. Churchill, across the way, has a fine array of strawberries and cherries, also a beautiful field of red and black raspberries. And strange to say, he and Frank Carpenter are about the only ones in this section who have a few tame Briton blackberries, some thirty or forty acres having been killed out several years ago by drought.  The only redeeming feature about the blackberry question in this part of the state is that the birds left many seeds in corners of the fences and edges of woods and swamps, consequently when the gardens of that luscious fruit failed “the woods were still full of ‘em”, and many fine wild berries are brought in to our markets. So the birds are our friends even though they do appropriate some of the berries.

 

            A.C. Larson has a fine field of strawberries on the Berlin road.  He was for a number of years Mr. Churchill’s gardener.  Now he has all he can do at his own home and he is making it a pleasant place too with green lawn, flowers and other things, besides his fruit and vegetables.  Mrs. Larson picked on Monday two hundred and twenty five quarts of berries herself, and Mr. Larson sold 85 cases.  Over fifteen hundred cases were shipped by C.J. Vosburg this week, and other parties will make the total up to about two thousand cases.  The quality and size has beaten any southern berry ever brought to this market.

            By Bailey has some of the finest Warfield we ever saw.  Homer Carpenter of Badger has shown some fine Jessies in this market.  Caleb Chapman showed up a few samples of Jessies at the strawberry picnic big as wooden wedges (fine inches in circumferences.)

            A.C. Larson presented ye editor with a quart Monday and there were only nineteen berries to make the quart.
