This extensive business was founded in 1865 and has since been conducted with great success.  The premises first occupied was a small wooden building that stood on the site of the present spacious brick block, which contains a large area of floor space all of which is essentially necessary for the adequate display of the immense stock which is the largest carried by any one merchant in Waupaca.  This house is run entirely under the management of H.M. Lea who has been connected with its affairs for twenty-one years taking exclusive charge seven years ago.  He is a shrewd businessman and by his courteous ways and square dealings has made numerous friends and successfully carried on the business started by his father.  He possesses every possible faculty for satisfactorily dealing with the largest jobbing houses and manufacturers and is continually on the lookout for anything that will serve the interests of his patrons.  This firm carries a full and complete line of dry goods, clothing, boots and shoes, and groceries and is noted for its splendid array and lowness of prices.  The clothing department is located on the second floor and embraces a line of goods from the finest to the cheapest grades that cannot fail to please.  Mr. Lea during his long and active career has won a measure of popularity, confidence and respect in Waupaca, second to no other member of her commercial circles.  He is highly esteemed by the community for his sound business principles and integrity and is one of the most successful merchants in the city.  Buying goods in large quantities enables the proprietor to do so at reduced prices the benefit of which is given to the customers.
