THE WAUPACA REPUBLICAN August 26, 1904 CHAIN O’ LAKES AND GRANDVIEW HOTEL. The season at the Chain o’ Lakes is beginning to draw near its end. Resorters are leaving for their city homes, but all are very well pleased with the Chain and its resorts. A great many who have visited all leading summer resorts report the Chain o’ Lakes the most beautiful spot they have ever seen, and wonder why more people are not at this beautiful place. They say they had never heard of the place before and it is on account of its being so little advertised. This season has not been very prosperous for any of the resorts on account of bad weather and the World’s Fair at St. Louis. But the Chain o’ lakes is not the only place that has suffered, reports from other summer resorts convince that they have not been more prosperous. A “C” serpent? has been seen off Grand View dock a number of times and has caused quite a sensation amongst the resorters. It is estimated to be about twelve feet long, one foot in diameter with a head fully two feet long. But the mystery of it all is, that it comes up just when there are a number of people near its haunt. One gentleman was out in a boat and it came up right next to his boat; he struck it across the back with his oar. The blow, however, did not seem to hurt the serpent but it broke the gentleman’s oar. Another gentleman shot at it a number of times and hit each time but the serpent did not seem to mind it. Ask Wayne Tully about it. The tennis tournament at Grand View last week, which was played by Mr. Hirst and Mr. Jelleff of New London against George Lord and S. W. Midgley of Chicago, resulted by narrow margin a victory for the former. Mrs. C. P. Fox of St. Louis gave a euchre card party Tuesday evening to the guests of Grand View. Dainty refreshments were served. Miss Mary E. Peterson of Chicago, the renowned soprano vocalist, and Miss Mildred Willmer of Buffalo, N.Y., a renowned elocutionist, who are camping at Point Comfort with a party, will give an entertainment at the Veteran’s Home amusement hall Friday evening.
