ENGLISH LUTHERAN CHAPEL DEDICATED ON SUNDAY, JUNE 3
Last Sunday the new chapel of the English Lutheran congregation of this city was dedicated. The festivities began at 10:00 a.m. with the full order of morning service. After a well rendered vocal solo by Miss Edith Modeen, and a hymn by the congregation, Rev. C.A. Lund, president of the Superior Conference, delivered the dedicatory address. Then followed the anthem “I Was Glad” by the choir, after which the impressive and beautiful dedicatory service was conducted. Assisting in the dedication were Rev. A.J. Johnson, of Unity, Rev. Fred Olson of Wisconsin Rapids, and Rev. C.M. Olander of Waupaca.
Immediately after the dedication, Mayor Paronto of Waupaca in well-chosen words delivered greetings from the city, and welcomed the congregation as an important factor in the life of the community. The anthem, “Be Joyful In the Lord,” following the greetings of Mayor Paronto, fittingly closed the impressive service.
It is estimated that over two hundred attended the dedicatory service. Rev. Olson’s congregation, at Wisconsin Rapids was represented by a large delegation.
The Ladies’ Aid of the congregation served a free diner immediately after the morning service to all who wished to stay.
The new chapel is the work of Contractor Anderson of this city and is a splendid specimen of his skill. It is churchly in every detail, and is marked by a simple beauty and constituency of architecture and appointments. Among some of the unusual features are the stone altar and velour dossal curtain.
At eight o’clock Sunday evening special festive services were held. At this time sermons were delivered by Rev. A.J. Johnson and Rev. Fred Olson. A vocal solo was rendered by George Lindahl in the usual pleasant manner, as was also a vocal duet by Miss Edith Madsen and Orlando Anderson. The anthem “Bless the Lord” was given by the choir.
The congregation was very fortunate in having the Mission Meeting of the Ogema District of the Superior Conference combined with its dedicatory service. This brought seven visiting pastors to the city.
The Mission Meeting began at 8:00 p.m. on Monday. At this first session, sermons based on the theme of the meeting, namely, “rusting in the Lord,” were delivered by Rev. E.J. Alstatt and Rev. B.E. Walters. A vocal duet by Misses Esther Erickson and Leta Morey and an anthem by the choir were well rendered.
Tuesday, 10:00 a.m., the business meeting of the district was held
Tuesday, 2:00 p.m., Rev. C.A. Benander introduced for discussion the subject “The Material Benefit of Church Membership.” Rev. J.T. Olander followed with the subject “The Spiritual Benefit of Church Membership.” A discussion followed in which many took part.
Tuesday 7:30 p.m. a Bible study hour was led by Mr. E.T Lindburg of the Lutheran Bible School St. Pau., Minn.
The meeting of the district closed Tuesday evening with sermons by Rev. Fred Olson, Rev. N. Oscar Montan, remarks by Rev. A.J. Johnson, Rev. J.T. Olander and Rev. C.M. Olander; quartet by Rev. C.M. Olander, George Lindahl, Chas. Soli and Orlando Anderson; vocal solo by Miss Agnes Thompson, and an anthem by the choir.
