WAUPACA COUNTY POST
July 26, 1990
… A skit, “One Hundred and Going Strong,” was presented by parish performers.
St. Mary Magdalene’s was formed by six families, with approximately 20 members, as a mission in 1890; its first church, at 321 S. Division St., was purchased from the Congregationalists for $1,000; it is now the home of the Apostolic Lighthouse Church.
It was not until 1902 that a resident pastor was assigned to Waupaca. The Rev. Albert Rielander took the helm in 1924, becoming the driving force behind the construction of the present church, at the corner of Badger and Division streets.
The parish now has some 2,500 members living throughout the 500-square-mile-plus parish that stretches from halfway to Amherst on the west to halfway to Weyauwega on the east, and from Wild Rose on the south to north of Iola.
The parish’s centennial observance will continue Sunday with an ice cream social following the 10:30 a.m. Mass.
Marion Seidor, one of the oldest members of the parish, wore the dress her aunt wore at Marion’s baptism, more than 80 years ago.
Brother Richard McDaniel, OFM Cap., now of Milwaukee, returned to his home parish to help celebrate its 100th anniversary.
Sister Mary Hart, OSF, also was on hand for her home parish’s celebration.
